This was a busy weekend.  We had to move the waterline that came into the house and removed the sliding door so we could frame the opening for a new door with a side glass panel.  A temporary construction door was installed in the opening. The opening needed to be repaired before we could install the door.  We also insulated some of the upstairs walls that did not have electrical wires in the wall runs.  Earlier in the week, Semco came out and moved the gas line.

Today is the start of the "big lift".  The house is level but sits on a failing foundation.  Over 50% of the blocks are damaged by freezing water which left them broken and misaligned.  The house will be raised two block (16"), the damaged block will be replaced and two rows of new block will be added.  This will allow a new grade to be created that will allow water to drain away from the house.  There are 12 piers under the house that support the floor.  The piers will also be raised and minor adjustments will be made to level the floor as needed.

It was a grey cold day with a constant 25 mph wind blowing off the lake.  The house now only needs to be jacked up another three inches.  Jerry said that he will do this on Monday and the new block is scheduled to be delivered on Tuesday. Today John and I finished breaking up then taking out the sidewalk along the side of the house.  We started to dig around the perimeter of the house to expose the first coarse of block.

Work continues with the raising of the house.  Root damage from nearby tree more extensive and causing delay with the block work.  Fortunately, Gerry is a conscientious contractor so he is removing roots which penetrated the foundation before replacing damaged block and building block work higher.
